Aiming fire at the Trump administration, he criticized the president and his advisers for attacking leaders of states like Michigan who have imposed new restrictions on businesses to contain rising case numbers.“What the hell’s the matter with these guys?” Mr. Biden said. “It’s totally irresponsible.”Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, speaking before Mr. Biden, said they were focused on “opening this economy responsibly and rebuilding it so it works for working people.”- Advertisement – “More people may die, if we don’t coordinate,” he said. – Advertisement – His speech came at a perilous moment for the recovery.Credit card data and other indicators suggest that consumers began to pull back spending this month as infection, hospitalization and death rates from the virus surge nationwide. States have begun to impose new restrictions on economic activity in an effort to tamp down the spread. But stock markets were rising again on Monday, encouraged by news that Moderna’s vaccine for the virus appears to be highly effective. Still, widespread distribution of a vaccine that would allow Americans to resume anything close to normal levels of travel, dining out and other types of spending on services that have been crushed by the pandemic is likely months away. Economists continue to call for a new and immediate round of aid from Congress to help people and businesses weather the difficult time before the rebound is complete. Earlier on Monday, Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris spoke with business and union leaders to discuss the recovery, including Mary Barra, the chief executive of General Motors; Sonia Syngal, the chief executive of Gap; Satya Nadella, the head of Microsoft; Richard Trumka of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. and Rory Gamble, president of the United Auto Workers. “They represent very different perspectives, but I’m convinced we can all come together around the same table to advance areas of common ground,” Mr. Biden said. He underscored the importance of unity between business leaders and unions and said that unions would have more power under his watch.Mr. Biden said he supported a robust stimulus package such as the $3 trillion bill that House Democrats passed earlier this year, and he insisted that funding for states and cities needs to be included in such legislation. The president-elect said that sick leave and money for child care were also priorities, arguing that people should not have to choose between working and caring for others. “For millions of Americans who’ve lost hours and wages or have lost jobs, we can deliver immediate relief and it need be done quickly,” Mr. Biden said. “Congress should come together and pass a Covid relief package” along the lines of the $3 trillion bill that House Democrats passed earlier this year.Mr. Biden said that combating the virus remained the most urgent matter, however, and called on President Trump to begin the transition process quickly. President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. warned that a “very dark winter” was ahead and called on Congress to pass an economic stimulus package immediately to help workers struggling to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. In his first economic address since winning the election this month, Mr. Biden said he supported a national mask mandate to help curb the rise of the virus and that Congress should provide trillions of dollars in fiscal support to workers, businesses and state and local governments.- Advertisement –
Star golfer Tiger Woods recently said that he is keeping his options very open and may coach himself instead of working with a professional. Although the fourteen-time major champion has won several non-major tournaments in the past few years, he has not won a major since his legendary U.S Open win in 2008.On the course during the majors, he has often looked like he has been scrambling for his life. He has come close several times since then with nine top-six finishes since his last major, but his best finish in the last five majors has been a tie for 40th. Some say that Woods trying so hard to catch Jack Nicklaus is what’ really holding him back, which may be part of it.Tiger Woods has not won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open — Photo courtesy of Getty ImagesHowever, a big part of it is also trying to find a new identity and sense of confidence. Identity and confidence means everything in this mental game of golf, but in many ways, a player’s identity on the course is related to his or her identity off it.Tiger seems to have lost some of his confidence since his memorable scandal. “I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to,” Woods said. “I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled.”Although this way of thinking was immoral, the notion that he was on top of the world probably fueled his confidence, and is probably a big reason why he was dominating the PGA tour for years. When you look at video of the old Tiger, you see a man with a Jordan-esque flare, a man who thought he was invincible and played like it.He was full of passion and this passion carried him to victories. He fist pumped with more intensity, he swore and was much more violent with his clubs. Just looking at the way he carried himself on the course, you could tell he was a force to reckoned with.Where has the 2000 Tiger Woods, who guided his putt to the hole with his finger at the PGA Championship, gone? Where is the Tiger that slammed his hat down at the 2008 Arnold Palmer Invitational? Where is the 2008 Tiger that fist pumped after sinking the putt to get into the U.S. Open playoff against Rocco Mediate? This wild beast has been tamed, and now, he just looks emotionless and lost when he plays in majors. Since the scandal, he has become a different man, not just in his scores in majors but also off the course. In addition to his struggles in the majors and reducing his anger on the course, he got divorced, his kids are growing up and as far as we know he is faithful to his girlfriend Linsey Vonn. Not to forget, Woods has had multiple injuries. The injuries has held him back to some extent, but not nearly as much as his mental game. The possible decision to coach himself may be a turning point; maybe this is the point where Tiger finds a new identity.Woods started out his career with Butch Harmon from 1996-2004, and worked with Hank Haney from 2004-2010. The last four years, Woods has worked with Sean Foley. The truth is that the only obstacle standing in Tiger’s way of winning another major is himself. The man has received a great deal of criticism for constantly trying to change his swing after having achieved a formula for success.Reality is, he does not need a swing coach. This is the time for Tiger to take a step back and stop over-thinking everything. He can only rediscover the harmony he used to have in the majors on his own; no Butch Harmon; no Sean Foley; nor Hank Haney can give it to him.
Damien Duff scored against former club Newcastle to hand Fulham victory at Craven Cottage.Duff grabbed his goal in the second half when he picked up a long ball from Danny Murphy, brushed off Jose Enrique, and slotted in from 12 yards.Clint Dempsey was twice denied by Magpies keeper Steve Harper, who produced two brilliant saves.Nile Ranger had Newcastle’s best opportunity when his turn-and-shot was saved by Mark Schwarzer. It was the only time the Australian keeper, who has just come back from Asian Cup duty, was called into making a save with his opposite number the far busier of the two.But Harper only really earned his day’s wages in the second half following an opening 45 minutes which saw only two clear-cut chances created. The closest the home side came to opening the deadlock in that period was when the effervescent Dempsey smashed his shot from the edge of the six-yard area over the Newcastle bar.Alan Pardew’s Magpies, who had coped admirably during January without the now-departed and injured striker Andy Carroll, were dealt another setback in the forwards department in the 14th minute when a collision with Steve Sidwell resulted in Shola Ameobi coming off with what was later diagnosed as a suspected fractured cheekbone.Ranger, his replacement, has yet to find his feet in black and white but he did make himself a nuisance when Joey Barton’s in-swinging free-kick caused an uncertain Sidwell to head a yard past his own post. That was the sum of the good chances in the half, but thankfully the match improved tenfold after the break.Within five minutes of the restart, Harper pulled off a great low save from Dempsey on the left before Duff followed up by sidefooting the loose ball a yard wide of the other post. Up the other end, Leon Best, who made his mark at Newcastle this season with a hat-trick against West Ham, twice came close, first when he failed to connect with Jonas Gutierrez’s ball across the six-yard box before heading over from eight yards a minute later.Despite those two chances, Fulham were looking the more assured with the ball at their feet.Moussa Dembele, who set up the earlier chance, created the next opportunity for Fulham when he again found Dempsey on the left and the United States striker’s vicious shot was brilliantly pushed over by Harper. But a few minutes later, the Newcastle number one was given little chance of stopping Duff from scoring after the spritely midfielder dispossessed left-back Enrique and slotted in.Fulham could have made the scoreline more handsome in the closing moments but Dempsey and Dembele were denied by Newcastle’s man-of-the-match in goal. “There’s only two things that will prevent Colin Kaepernick from having a job in the NFL,” Smith said. “That is one, if he shows up Saturday and can’t throw the ball on the damn football field, he’s throwing the ball in the stands. He’d have to be that God awful not to get a legitimate look and potentially have a job next week.”He continued to explain the second thing, which is that Kaepernick needs to stay quiet in the days leading up to the event.”The other thing that could be a hindrance is if he opens his damn mouth and starts talking too much, and scares these teams off and gives them the indication that more of what transpired, that led to all of this, will continue forward,” Smith said. “Only Colin Kaepernick can mess it up. It’s beyond all of that other stuff now. He needs to shut up. No Instagram. No Twitter. No anything. Show up Saturday, work out. Don’t say a word before then.”“Only Colin Kaepernick can mess this up, it’s beyond all that other stuff now.”-@stephenasmith on what he’s been told about Kaepernick’s workout in front of NFL teams Saturday. pic.twitter.com/zXer6qQeSD— Golic and Wingo (@GolicAndWingo) November 13, 2019Smith said if Kaepernick can do all of that, he’ll have an NFL job “within the next week or two.”The former 49ers QB did release a brief statement on Tuesday, essentially just confirming he’ll show up for the workout in Atlanta.I’m just getting word from my representatives that the NFL league office reached out to them about a workout in Atlanta on Saturday. I’ve been in shape and ready for this for 3 years, can’t wait to see the head coaches and GMs on Saturday.— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) November 13, 2019As for what to expect Saturday, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport shared details Wednesday morning.Event begins at 3 p.m. ETInterview is at 3:15 p.m. ETMeasurements, stretching & warmups are afterTiming & testing at 3:50 p.m. ETQB drills at 4:15 p.m. ETIf a team isn’t able to send someone to the workout, every part will be recorded to share with NFL teams. The league sent the following memo to every team on Tuesday: The NFL has set up a combine-style workout for Colin Kaepernick scheduled for Saturday, and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith claims there are two things the free agent quarterback needs to do if he wants to feel good about his job prospects.Smith, appearing on ESPN Radio’s “Golic and Wingo” show Wednesday morning, said he spoke with people “directly” regarding Kaepernick. “Earlier this year, we discussed some possible steps with (Kaepernick’s) representatives and they recently emphasized his level of preparation and that he is ready to work out for clubs and be interviewed by them. We have therefore arranged this opportunity for him to work out, and for all clubs to have the opportunity to evaluate his current readiness and level of interest in resuming his NFL career.”While every team is invited, it’s not clear just how many teams will send someone to attend. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported Tuesday night a team in the NFC will show up because, “We have nothing to lose by attending Kaepernick’s workout, but I still think for us it would just be an information-gathering trip.”Anderson also reported there is interest from the Cowboys in Kaepernick’s workout.Kaepernick, 32, hasn’t played in the league since the 2016 season with the 49ers. In 12 games, he had a 16-4 TD-INT ratio, averaging 186.8 passing yards per game. He also ran for 468 yards and two touchdowns. His 88.9 quarterback rating ranks 23rd all time among QBs with at least 1,500 career pass attempts.
