Most people have seen video of microorganisms in motion, some have short filaments known as cilia that cover their outer edges causing movement of the organism or the fluid in which they exist. Others such as the unicellular microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, have longer appendages known as flagella, which are flexible rods protruding from the front of the body. C. reinhardtii uses its two flagella to swim through liquid, breaststroke style, which means the appendages must be synchronized—but what mechanism allows this synchronization to occur? Scientists do not know but have suspected it has to do with hydrodynamic forces, meaning the movement of the fluid causes it to come about. In this new effort, the researchers report that experiments they have carried out suggest such assumptions have been wrong, and that the synchronization comes about at least in part due to contractile fibers that connect the two flagella together.The first experiment conducted by the team consisted of placing C. reinhardtii samples in a pipette and then filming the microorganisms as the liquid in which they were swimming inside was sloshed back and forth at varying intensities. The team reports that the flagella initially synchronized with the flow of the fluid, but only up to a point, at which it could not keep up as the slosh rate was increased. They noted also that the rate at which the flagellum beat individually in isolation from its normal partner varied by amounts up to 30 percent, but the two still synchronized when working together. They then calculated that if hydrodynamic forces alone were causing the synchronization, the flagella would have to produce a flow 30 times the normal swim speed of the microorganism to account for such a difference, thus, such forces do not appear to be the answer.The team also looked at mutant samples of C. reinhardtii which did not have a band of contractile fibers connecting the flagella inside their bodies as is normal for the algae and found the flagella did not synchronize. This they claim, suggests that the fibers are somehow causing or allowing the synchronization to occur. Here are five strategies to keep top of mind before you press “send.”1. Utilize social content.Technological change and generational change go hand in hand. The Generation Y consumers of today tend to intertwine social media and email usage. According to a recent study by Pew Research, 90 percent of millennials use the web to send and receive emails. However, they also like to tweet, update their online profiles and send text messages multiple times throughout the day.It’s therefore important to incorporate social media into your email marketing by allowing subscribers to easily share information with their friends and followers via their social media accounts. Mobile matters.Smartphones have changed the way we interact with email and one other. Millennials are more likely than all other age groups to have a cell phone. According to BlueHornet’s 2014 Consumer Views of Email Marketing report, 47.5 percent of consumers have used their mobile devices to sort through their email before reading them elsewhere. As such, you need to optimize your email for use on smartphones. Make sure your email campaigns have responsive design, where the design responds to the screen size used to display the message.5. Conversation counts.Millennials outpace older generations in virtually all types of Internet and cell phone usage. Sending messaging and content doesn’t have to be a challenge when it comes to millennials. Adept at recognizing and blocking spam and valuing conversation, millenials prefer to do the research on their own to make decisions rather than being “sold.” By segmenting your contacts into lists based on demographics, desires and behavior, you can more effectively target your emails to the right audience and experience greater returns as a result. The same study found that around three-fourths of companies surveyed agree that digital tech is changing how they do business.Fortunately, digital transformation doesn’t require businesses to move every process to the cloud, nor does it require them to invest millions of dollars in brand-new tech — a critical note, since more than half of SMBs plan to use current IT budgets to fund their digital efforts. Small companies can’t afford to sink money into suboptimal campaigns the way big ones can. With a predictive analytics tool that integrates with existing tech, small businesses can stretch their advertising dollars much further.Similarly, implementing customer relationship management technology is a digital step that can grow your business. According to Salesforce, growing SMBs are twice as likely to be utilizing a CRM than their struggling counterparts. CRM costs start at $10 per user per month, with many CRM providers offering affordable cloud-based solutions for small businesses.3. Work with someone who has been there, done that.SMB Group reports that 33 percent of SMBs don’t have digital transformation strategies because they need some help. Don’t wait for the competition to make the first move — find a technology partner with experience in the right areas.Bigger companies can afford to staff robust IT departments, but smaller companies don’t have that kind of cash. By outsourcing, small companies can maximize their resource pools and only pay for the aspects of digital transformation with the greatest impact.A good technology partner will recommend in-budget solutions that are compatible with a business’s infrastructure. Ask potential partners whether they have experience with small businesses, who at the vendor will be responsible for communications and what kind of preparations the business should make ahead of time.Digital transformation isn’t some vague buzzword. For small businesses, digital transformation includes all the little steps forward that add up to massive cost savings, happier customers and improved prospects.
