first_imgLOS ANGELES >> In one of his first public acts as head coach of the L.A. Clippers, Doc Rivers declared DeAndre Jordan equals with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. At the time, the claim was purely speculative.Paul and Griffin were both All-NBA players; Jordan was an athletic, but enigmatic, center who had struggled to find his place on the team with Vinny Del Negro as a coach.Rivers’ did more than verbally validate Jordan; he put him in better positions to succeed. And, Jordan rewarded him with a ton more production and activity, ascending into the top tier of NBA centers – a journey that culminated last season with a spot on the All-NBA first team and, more impressively, the gold medal stand in Rio de Janerio. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Jordan wasn’t a star because Doc Rivers said so; he earned it.And, with his team ailing now, mired in a crushing three-game losing streak to teams with losing record, Jordan needs to prove Rivers right once again. The Clippers have been 10 points worse than the opposition with Jordan on the floor in the last four games. He’s scoring less than 10 points per game, and he’s not impacting the game offensively in the way you’d hope one of your stars would.Asking Jordan to replace Griffin and Paul on offense is foolish. He’s not equipped to be a primary playmaker and is at his best when he’s being set up by a top-notch passer. The Clippers have gotten more offense in lineups with Marreese Speights, a big man who can create his own shot and stretch defenses.Jordan has been unable to dominate on defense over the last three, though. Dirk Nowitzki, a tough matchup for anyone, torched the Clippers’ in the first half of their loss to Dallas on Friday. Timofey Mozgov scored 19 points against the Clippers – one less than his season high. And, Nikola Jokic scored 24, including five quick points in a crucial stretch as soon as Jordan entered the game in the fourth quarter.center_img Over the course of this season, Griffin has sat in front of the press and taken responsibility for a loss. So, has Paul. Monday, when it might have been Jordan’s turn, he left before speaking to the press. The brief downturn in Jordan’s production stands out because 1) he’s proven to be capable, and 2) it’s come at a time when the Clippers need him.The Clippers begin a three-game road trip Wednesday in New Orleans. Jordan, who will have his high school uniform retired on Thursday, will face Houston on Friday and Oklahoma City on Saturday. Each of those games present different challenges. And, more importantly, in each of those games, the Clippers need Jordan to meet those challenges.last_img read more
