first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram The Victorian Parliament will continue featuring a strong Greek presence, as all of the Labor MPs of Greek background managed to get re-elected, and are even augmented by a new member, Kat Theophanous. This impressive electoral performance has already led to speculation that more Greeks might also find their way to the cabinet of the new Andrews government, following the landslide Labor victory. Both of the current Victorian State Ministers, Jenny Mikakos and Philip Dalidakis managed to get re-elected in Northern and Southern Metropolitan Regions respectively, while both Steve Dimopoulos and Nick Staikos were easily re-elected, both increasing Labor’s reach in their respected electorates.Bentleigh in particular was considered to be an ultra-marginal seat, but Staikos not only managed to defend it, he also marked a swing of 12.6 per cent in favour of Labor, winning with 62.6 per cent.In Oakleigh, Dimopoulos also boasts for a swing of eight per cent, beating his main opponent, Andrew Edmonds (himself of Greek background) by 66.2 per cent to 33.8 per cent. The most significant victory is that of Kat Theophanous, who apparently managed to take the Northcote seat out of the Greens’ hands, beating Lidia Thorpe with 52.8 per cent.Another Labor candidate of Greek background was going for a Greens seat; Jennifer Kanis was a strong contender for the seat of Melbourne, trailing 1.2 per cent behind Ellen Sandell, who looks like she will retain the seat. All in all, the Greeks seem to be well-represented in the Victorian Parliament, albeit only in the Labor Party. The Liberals’ South Barwan current member Andrew Katos met the fate of the Party, and appears to be losing his seat, following an eight per cent swing in favour of the Labor Party.last_img read more
