first_imgMayor Ian McGarvey and council staff launch the interactive map.Donegal County Council has launched a new Interactive Winter Roads Gritting map.This map provides motorists and road users with up to date information on routes to be gritted and basic statistics on the length of roads to be gritted on a given night. It also allows users to turn on and off different map layers and provides links to weather cameras to view live conditions. It also shows the locations of public sand and grit and provides details of the winter maintenance service routes.The winter gritting mapThe local authority has included an hourly forecast feed for most areas in the County so that the users can check their local forecast for the next 12-24 hours.This interactive map is linked to the Councils social media platforms and with a growing number of followers on the Councils Twitter accounts @roadsDCC or @donegalcouncil and Facebook page, this map should be a very useful tool for all roads users and local and national media outlets.The map allows you to change the background mapping from a topographic map to a street map to aerial and includes links to various other websites of winter interest plus a link to a help document. There is also a zoom in and out facility and you can zoom to the extent of a particular route as well as creating your own zoom to bookmarkDaragh McDonough, GIS Manager with Donegal County Council said that ‘this map has been developed with the road user and the motorist in mind. We have been working with our colleagues in our Roads Service to make sure that road users can access as much relevant information as they need to make safe driving decisions during the Winter months”.With the weather set to get colder of over the weekend, Mayor of Donegal Cllr. Ian McGarvey is encouraging the public check out this new interactive map which is available from www.donegalcoco.ie and to stay in touch through the Council’s Twitter account and Facebook page. He is also reminding the public to visit www.winterready.ie for practical tips and advice on staying safe and warm this Winter.The Mayor said the launch of the new interactive map is in keeping with the national campaign to ‘Be Winter Ready’.“The severe winter weather conditions experienced in 2010 and 2011 highlighted for everyone the importance of being prepared and the ‘Be Winter Ready’ booklet sets out practical tips and advice on staying safe and warm this Winter. This includes tips on being prepared at home, preparing for freezing temperatures and water shortages, road safety and making sure your vehicle is winter-ready and much more”.This booklet can be found at www.winterready.ie.
